I used a "G" hook.
ch 4, join in 1st ch with slst to form a ring.
ROW 1: ch 4 (this counts as 1 dc ch 1) *1 dc, ch 1 * 7 times. join in 3rd chain of beginning ch4. you will have 8 dc and 8 ch 1 spaces.
ROW 2: sl st in next ch 1 space and work 7 dc in same space; sc in next ch 1 space; repeat pattern around (7dc in one space, 1sc in next space) and join to beginning sc. you will have 4 - 7dc clusters and 4 sc. Fasten off.
ROW 3: attach new color in sc from last row and ch 4. working in same stitch work (1dc, ch 3, 1dc, ch 1, 1dc). ch 5. In next sc work (1dc, ch1, 1dc, ch 3, 1dc, ch1, 1dc). ch 5. continue pattern around and join to 3 ch of beginning ch 4. You will have 4 corner clusters of dc.
ROW 4: ch 1; in ch 1 space work 7 dc; 1 sc in ch 3 space and 7 dc in next ch 1 space; 1sc in center dc of last row of clusters around the ch 5 of the previous row. continue around. join with slst in ch1.fasten off.
ROW 5: Attach new color in sc in between the side clusters, ch 4, 1 dc in same stitch. ch 5; In next sc work (1dc, ch1, 1dc, ch3, 1dc, ch1,1dc). ch 5. In next sc work (1dc, ch1 1dc). ch5. continue around, join in 3rd ch of ch 4.
ROW 6:ch 1, 1hdc in ch 1 space, (3 hdc, 1dc into middle stitch of cluster below, 3hdc) in ch5 space, 1 hdc in ch 1 space, (2hdc, ch 3, 2hdc) in ch 3 corner space, 1hdc in ch1 space; (3 hdc, 1dc into middle stitch of cluster below, 3hdc) in ch5 space, 1 hdc in ch 1 space; (3 hdc, 1dc into middle stitch of cluster below, 3hdc) in ch5 space, 1hdc in ch1 space, (2hdc, ch3, 2hdc) in ch 1 corner space. continue in this pattern to end of row. join to 1st hdc and end off.
you may have to use a different size hook or add a row to make it 6 inches. this was a 6 inch square for me.
